Chapter 6

Chris was picked up by Ronald Franz and became very close. Franz thinks that Alex is an uneducated bum, wants to encourage him to get his life together, but McCandless tells Franz that he already has a college education, and lives this way by choice. Alex and Ronald spend a lot of time together, and Chris hops trains north to Seattle still looking for work, but isn’t able to, so returns to California where he has Franz pick him up. Ronald finds himself very sad and lonely once Chris leaves him, having become very attached to him. He gets a long letter from Chris soon after, encouraging him to get out on the road and live like he does, and Franz takes this advice. Franz waits for Chris' return, but one day when he picks up two hitchhikers and tells them about his friend “Alex,” they tell him that they just read an article in Outside magazine about it, and he’s dead. In response, Franz does not believe God, and buys his first bottle of whiskey in a long time.

Chapter 7

'Alex' turns up in Carthage looking for work, and once again is happy to do all of the least desirable jobs at the grain elevator. He becomes close to GailBorah, Westerberg’s girlfriend, and tells her things he hasn’t shared with anyone in awhile. Westerberg doesn’t ask about Chris' family, but he has a feeling that, knowing McCandless, he just got stuck on something that happened with his father and couldn’t let it go. He mentions his younger sister a lot and Westerberg feels like he's serious about relationships.

Chapter 8

When a man reads about 'Alex' death, Nick Jans feels no sympathy for Chris and says that it was his fault and he was ignorant about nature. Then another man named Gene Rosellini was also another type of Chris McCandless. He was extremely smart but also chose to devote his life to an ambitious anthropological experiment. He dieted on roots, berries, seaweed and believed that it would be possible to become a Stone Age natice. However, he suddenly died with a knife through his heart. Another man named John Mallon Waterman was an natural at climbing and he became third youngest person to stand atop the highest landform. He loved his father but his parents had a divorce which broke John's heart. Waterman climbed the summit of Hinter and was almost like a hero to the Fairbanks climbers. He attempted to make a solo ascent to the south face of Denali, but failed the first time. He was never seen and it was assumed that he fell to his death. Finally there is a man named Carl McCunn who was a 35 year old photographer. with only a .22 and .30 caliber, he also neglected to arrange for the pilot to fly him back and costed him his life. Another mistake he made was raising only one arm when a plane flew by instead of two.

Chapter 9

Here we meet Everett Ruess who was born in Oakland, California. He was living out of a backpack with llittle money and also lived the life of Chris McCandless. He also wrote many letters and boasts himself. He also experienced the same physical weight loss but he seemed to like it. It was believed that Ruess fell to his death, but some investigatior think that Ruess was murdered by a team of cattle rustlers.
